There is a lot of hoopla surrounding the meaning of the song, The Rainbow Connection, written by Paul Williams and performed by Kermit the frog.
There are a variety of colorful ideas circulating about this sweet song. Thus, I shall build upon those ideas with my very own, humble attempt, to describe a rainbow connection.
“Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what’s on the other side…”
People sing songs about rainbows because, the idea of HOPE. The end of a path will result in a mind-blowing discovery (a.k.a. “pot of gold”). This could be about LIFE. Hope in life will lead to perpetual searching with no disappointment, for people who take action and are armed with endless dreams.
“…Rainbows are visions, but only illusions and rainbows have nothing to hide…”
Your eyes can see “something” but, if you are witnessing something that is an illusion (like magic) then, supposedly there is nothing to hide from you. But, in actuality, you are being tricked and there is something to hide.
“…So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it I know they’re wrong, wait and see…”
We know, we are viewing a spectacle of substance and there is an unknown element hiding. Again, this is HOPE, some may think it’s an illusion yet others believe something incredibly wonderful is around the corner (the hidden). Hence, the song states “I know they’re wrong wait and see”.
This could be about FRIENDS you meet. Your first impression of a person is quite an illusion—which comes to be a true VISION, once you are acquainted and their personalities are revealed. Those are the friends (rainbows) you will keep for a lifetime and these friendships turn into the mind blowing “pot of Gold” and we know—positive relationships create a blazing path towards elevated highs in our own lives.
“…Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me…”
HOPE will always keep you searching. The rainbow connection is the BOND of multiple, vibrant, colorful, extraordinarily ordinary different people who find each other. Friends, Lovers, Dreamers these are the multitudes of people out there who, we find a connection with or rather, a rainbow connection.
The song continues with a couple of more versus but, still proceeds to validate my themes.
So, do you think I have lost it? Or can you see the simplistic practicality of the song? Hence, why the dearly loved Kermit sings it!
